It Girl! Gena Oppenheim

A freelance reporter for OK! Weekly Magazine and former nightlife editor for La2Day.com, Gena shares her red carpet lifestyle tips.

My beauty go-to:

I am a die-hard, obsessed Clinique eyeliner girl.  I don’t wear a lot of makeup at all, but I never leave the house without a touch of black eyeliner under my eyes to bring them out.  Over the years, I have tried numerous kinds, but Clinique’s brand is the only one that doesn’t smudge or run – ever.  Tried and tested!

Red carpet essentials:

I am very used to asking celebrities what their red carpet must-haves are, but it’s a bit different for a reporter on the other side of the velvet rope.  On the red carpet, my bag is usually stocked full with a tape recorder, my iPhone, a camera, L’Oreal Infallible Red Lipstick and gum (I die for 5 Gum) for a quick refresher before an interview, and I always bring a snack just in case.

My beauty secret:

If I share, then it wouldn’t be a secret would it? But, I do use pure aloe vera instead of lotion after I shave my legs.  It seems to heal the skin much faster and prevents any sort of ingrown ever.

Playing dress up:

When summer rolls around I have so much fun playing with sundresses.  They are great because you can wear them casually during the day and throw on a pair of pumps for a night look without having to change.  The last one I bought was from French Connection’s UK Style line, sold at Sears – a floral print, flowy, mini tube dress that zips up the front!  They are great quality material and not too expensive.  As a reporter, the best advice I ever got was to have a closet in the trunk of your car because you never know where you’ll have to be next.  With a sun dress, its almost too easy to change your look by putting on a blazer or adding a few accessories (my favorite is Lia Sophia jewelry) and poof, a new you!

A luxury spot:

I love Shutters on the Beach during the day for a brunch by the ocean.  So relaxing and quaint with fresh air (a commodity in LA).
A tip from one of our readers: “The part about Shutters that many people don’t know is that you can park there and walk to the beach for the low price of $1 an hour. NO MORE METER FILLING. The city of Santa Monica has a deal with Shutters parking… it’s semi public! “ Thank you, Adam!

A weekend getaway:

My family’s small beach house in Pismo Beach!  I have been going since I was a baby and love that it is NOTHING like LA.  I drive up, tan by the beach, ATV in the sand, and go wine tasting in Arroyo Grande!  Plus, the people are so nice and laid back that you would think they are from a different planet.

A place for little pleasures:

For little gifts, I am an online shopper.  I love ThingsRemebered.com.  You can engrave items or customize them with photos.  My favorite little gift is a personalized bottle of wine.

Extra tip:

My biggest beauty tip to anybody would be to never over-do your makeup look no matter how fancy the occasion.  After watching tons of celebrities walk down the red carpet done up to the nines, I have found that the “Best Dressed” always goes to the one who can pull off a glamorous look, while still coming off natural and effortless.  Someone who plunges down the red carpet with false eyelashes longer than their hair and more blush than a circus clown, usually ends up on Fashion Police.  Being immersed in Hollywood, it can be easy to feel like you don’t look pretty unless you sat in a makeup chair for 12 hours, but in reality I have come to find that letting natural beauty shine through, makes a big difference.
