How To Cut Your Own Bangs - Wispy Bangs

I woke up one morning last Spring with an intense urge to cut my own bangs. I had seen a TikTok filter the day before and thought it looked pretty good so I watched a few hours worth of tutorials to learn how to get the look I wanted, purchased some scissors, and went for it.

Cutting your own bangs can be tricky, but my tutorial makes it simple. I’ve posted this tutorial on Instagram, Pinterest and Tiktok and the comments have shown that those who dared to try it, loved their results.

You can watch the instructions in the video above . Below, I am including some of the products I use to execute the full look: scissors (shears), round brush, hair protects, straightening iron, etc.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment so I can try to help you out. If you go for it, please tag me in your posts — I would love to see your results!

Hair Cutting Shears - These shears are sharp to get a clean cut on your bangs. I personally don’t think it’s necessary to spend a lot of money on shears on your first try but it’s better not to use home scissors. Bangs grow out quickly so you’ll get use out of these when you do touch ups.

Simple Comb - A simple comb is helpful to help you part your hair and get precise results while you trim. This isn’t the same comb I used in the tutorial, but the finer teeth are more effective and much easier to use.

Olivia Garden 1.75” Round Brush - This is the exact brush that I use to style my bangs when I blow dry them. There are lots of options you can find on Amazon but this is a great size.

BaByliss Pro Hair Dryer - This is the exact hair dryer that I use as well. It’s pretty light weight, which is a plus. If you already have a hair dryer though, just use the one you have!

The Ouai Leave-In Conditioner - I use this leave-in conditioner because it’s multi-purpose - de-tangling and heat protection. Also, little bit goes a long way. Knowing it was taking the place of two products and would last longer than expected made it worth the price for me. I also love the scent. It’s light weight which is important for your bangs since the hair is short and while you want to protect them from heat, you don’t want to make them greasy. Don’t spray directly onto your bangs. Use what’s left over in your hands from spreading the product thought the rest of your hair and lightly put it onto your bangs.

GHD Original Hair Styler - Using a straightener on your bangs is optional and this is the exact straightener I use. I’ve had this one for over 12 years! Personally, I like the rounded look for my bangs that is achieved with a round brush and blow dryer. If you are looking for a flatter look, you will want to use a flat iron. Be careful not to burn yourself or your hair though!
